Gustav Mahler (born Kalischt (now Kalište), Bohemia, July 7 1860; died Vienna, May 18 1911) was a Czech-Austrian composer and conductor. He was one of the last great composers of the Romantic period.

Gustav Mahler was born on the 7 July 1860 in Kaliste, Bohemia which was part of the Austrian Empire at the time and which is now part of the Czech Republic. Mahler's father was a tavern keeper and distiller in Kaliste, but when he was an infant, the family moved to Jihlava where Mahler was raised.
