Biomass is a promising feedstock for the next generation drop-in liquid fuels and renewable chemicals, and hence the development of economically viable technologies for the production of commodity and specialty chemicals from sustainable biomass have received significant attention in recent years. Although biomass transformation into drop-in biofuels involves multiple processing steps in which

Liquid biofuels are of particular interest because of the vast infrastructure already in place to use them, especially for transportation. The liquid biofuel in greatest production is ethanol (ethyl alcohol), which is made by fermenting starch or sugar. Brazil and the United States are among the leading producers of ethanol. LU BIOFUELS is a network of researchers within Lund University, which links together leading competences on biological conversion of biomass in a cross-disciplinary manner. LU Biofuels creates research synergies allowing us to effectively address the transition from petro-chemically based fuels, materials and chemicals to a sustainable The second largest user of biofuels is the district heating sector, which supplies over 40% of the heating in buildings.

The first generation biofuels are known to be made from agricultural products such as corn or sugarcane. The second generation biofuels use all forms of (lingo)cellulosic biomass. Liquid biofuels are of particular interest because of the vast infrastructure already in place to use them, especially for transportation.
